Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

Hi Guys,

You might have noticed, our SPCA and PAWS pet profiles have not been updated for a month or so. This is because SPCA has a decrease in human resources, and is unable to consistently maintain the profiles for the time being; while PAWS solely depends on volunteers to manage it in PetFinder.

Let's give the homeless pets there some much-needed, urgent help - frequent updates is crucial to get good exposure for the animals, especially those that are going to be put down soon.

I'd like to seek out some volunteers to perform the following crucial tasks:
  1. Pet Photography - To take photos of latest pets and note down relevant profile details for display in PetFinder. A person with some photography skills is much preferred - I believe that the rate of enquiries and adoption is directly proportional to the attractiveness of the pet's pictures. New pictures should preferably be updated at least once every 2 weeks.

  2. Profile Maintenance - This person, preferably a consistent volunteer at SPCA or PAWS, would be responsible in liaising with the shelter to update accurate information regarding each listed shelter pet at PetFinder, and to change the pet's status accordingly when it has been adopted.
For any kind volunteers that are willing to lend a helping hand, please respond to this forum post with your availability and details, so we can work out an effective schedule among our volunteers. You can also contact me directly at my profile

Save the animals, Save the world! (does it sound familiar haha?) {wink}

Hey guys... PetFinder is taking a pro-active approach! Let's not just allow SPCA and PAWS to put down the animals.. if you have free time, just take some pics, go for a vacation at SPCA, chat with the Man in the MASK at PAWS and put up some profiles so that more ppl can adopt those deserving doggies and adorable pussy cats!!

Hi Lynie,

Great to hear that! Have you done phototaking for SPCA previously, or is this your first time?

I'd like to work out the process with you - I'll give you access to some special SPCA pages which you can print out as a reference, so you know which pets have already been photographed and listed in PetFinder.

It'd be best if we can have a few photos for each animal, rather than the usual 1 photo that we receive from SPCA. Please note that each photographed animal's name, gender and age, and any additional characteristics that you think deserves a mention in their profile, i.e. their background or behaviour.

We also try to give some emphasis to the last chance animals that are to be put down in a month or so's time.

Please let me know more details so we can finalize the process, thanks!

Heya,
i've done it before.. but havne't for ages.. was for spca adoption gallery on their own website. usually i ask jacinta what she wants me to do, who she wants pics of, what info she wants and so on.. this saturday i think she just wants me to take photos so that she can update the adoption gallery.

would the animals for spca adoption gallery be the same as the ones for petfinder? what i mean is, do you want the same animals featured in both or do you want to feature animals NOT shown in spca website gallery this time around? its up to you.. i can do two separate collections.. shabana, another volunteer is coming as well, so i've got help. yay!

oh boy i feel like i'm rambling on.. if i'm not being clear, its coz i've got the flu and i'm pretty medicated right now {shy}. how about one of you guys just call me later and we'll figure all this out. i'll speak to jacinta as well to clarify exactly what she wants from me this saturday.

thanks!
lyn

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

Hey Lynie,

Yup, the adoption gallery is what we use for updating the pets. However, we only get 1 pic for each pet in the gallery, probably the standard format she sends out to people. So would be good if you can add on to that with more photos of each pet - just name the images according to the pet's name and email me the zipped attachment will do.

Great - now that you have another photographer to help you, let's try to get in as many profiles as possible! It'd be good if you can take additional photos of animals not in the gallery - preferably last chance ones with at least 3 weeks or more to go. You can check with Jacinta on recommended ones - 'cause some of them might be too aggressive or have medical / behavioural problems that make them unsuitable for adoption.

For these animals, please record down their basic details so we can create their profiles accordingly, i.e. name, age, gender, breed and if applicable, how long more before being put down. If unsure of any detail, you can just fill in approximate values.

Take care and get well soon before Saturday, else your sneezes will scare away the animals and shake the camera violently {wink}

hi, how do we send you guys the photos? jacinta will send to you?

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

Hi Lynie,

Usually Jacinta will email to me, but it'd definitely speed things up if you can send to me directly.

What details have you collected for each pet? If it is just the name, gender, breed and age, you can put those info into the image's filename itself. If there are more descriptive details, then you can write them down in an accompanying text file.

I've also sent an email to yourgmail, you can reply to that email of mine.

Thanks and looking forward to the photos!

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

andy,
i received a message saying that my email to you with the first batch of photos did not go through.. did you receive any photos from me yesterday?

AndyKoh 08-13-2008 01:53 PM

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

Hi Lynie,

Thanks for the nice pics and descriptions, I've received them! {good}

Hmm, are you sure the email bounced - what error did you receive? I received it fine though hehe...

I'll be updating them shortly... no problem, I can wait for the other photographer to email me the 2nd batch of pics on Thursday, please let her know thanks!

As for the no name doggies, I'll probably just post them up first and let Jacinta figure out the puzzle hehe!

Keep up the good work, Lynie!

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

I'd signed up as a vonlunteer for PAWS last time,
and I go there to help out from time to time.

They really need more volunteers.

Those who live nearby PAWS or SPCA, go and
help them out, whenever you are free. Even
if it is only just 1 hour help, your contribution
helps them a lot.

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

Great work, Alan! Since you go to PAWS often, maybe you can also assist them in taking photos of their animals for use in PetFinder's adoption gallery?

Yes, these shelters are really under-resourced and every bit of help the public can give would make a difference.

Re: Volunteers needed for SPCA & PAWS

Hi Andy, I did take some photos last time. I thought they
already have volunteers doing such jobs, coz' I used to
see their website showing cat photos.

Most of the time, I go there and pass some materials
(i.e, newspapers, etc) which they need, and I play with those
cats there for hour plus, so that they won't be so lonely.
Not really considered as "often"... just try my best... usually,
I go there on Saturday morning.
