leukemia

one of my cats is infected by leukemia(early stage) ,i don't know how much time left for her.all these while she's an outdoor cat.

vet asked me to keep her in the cage for remaining of her life so that it won't infect the other cat,fyi i have 2 cats.they are siblings.but i have to let her go every now and then so that she could stretch her body

she keep missing lately, disappearing, not coming back for meal...

she's a shy cat and normally won't go far from home..maybe maximum is 3-4 houses away.

need advice on handling this.tq

Hi, Ridz -- I'm very sorry to read about your cat's FeLV+ diagnosis.

Here is some info on how the FeLV virus is spread:

Quote:

Although the FeLV virus has a limited life span outside the body of only two or three hours, it can still be spread in a number of ways:
To foetuses in the mother cat's womb
To nursing kittens, through the mother's milk
Through saliva (bites, mutual grooming, and sometimes shared food dishes)
Through nasal secretions - rubbing noses or through mutual grooming
Sometimes through urine and feces by shared litter boxes or using the same areas outdoors to leave body waste
The important thing here is to notice that the virus has a short life span once the cat sheds it. When your cat needs some exercise time outside the cage, do you have a separate room in which you could let her stretch her legs? As long as she uses separate food & water bowls and litter box, and if you keep the room closed off to your 2 healthy cats for 2-3 hours after she's left it, you should be fine.

Letting her out, however, is neither a great idea for her nor other cats with whom she comes into contact. If she gets into a fight, she won't fare well in her weakened state, and she is also likely to infect the other cat. If it's at all possible, I would suggest keeping her within your house. Good luck to you and all 3 of your kitties!

My heart goes out to you! I'm sure it's extremely painful watching her condition worsen. I send strength, patience and blessings to you both.

i'm wondering if the virus can be prevented by vaccinations?

Hi, x-rules! From everything I've heard and read, there is an FeLV vaccination out there, but it has proven so ineffective as to be worthless. :-(

Dear Ridz, your kitty was blessed to have lived with a person who cared so deeply for her. She is at peace now, pain-free, and I hope your grief will ease soon. Best wishes...
