There was an earlier case where the person found her dog being held captive at a nearby house and the kidnapper refused to give it back, until she threatened to make a police report and scan the dog's microchip ID to prove his identification.

This makes me wish that there was a dog tracking service available. Just like how sniffer and tracker dogs are trained to locate drugs or people, we can have a dog sniffer squad for locating lost dogs. I'm sure the sniffer dog can easily locate the strong scent left behind by the roaming dog, unless it is kidnapped into a vehicle. And I'm sure paying for the service is not a problem as most of us treat the dog as part of our family and will do whatever it takes to find him back.
