Default Pulau Ketam & MPK Klang Dump Dogs in Uninhabited Island

The Star Online > Central Thursday April 9, 2009

Stray dogs shipped off to an Isolated island of Pulau Ketam

RESIDENTS of Pulau Ketam turned dogcatchers recently, to help curb the stray dog population on their island.

The residents, mostly fishermen, had built contraptions to trap the dogs that were then sent to a nearby-uninhabited island.

According to village head Cha Keng Lee, the residents had written to the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) alerting them about the large number of strays on the island. Helpless: Some of the trapped dogs awaiting to be transported to Pulau Tengah.

“The MPK councillor in charge of Pulau Ketam used the money allocated to his service centre on the island to fund the dog- catching project,’’ said Cha adding that residents were paid RM10 for a big dog, RM8 for a medium-sized dog and RM5 for a small dog that they managed to trap.

Cha claimed the money was used to build the traps as well as transport the dogs to the uninhabited island known as Pulau Tengah.

He added about 400 out of the estimated 2,000 stray dogs in Pulau Ketam were trapped and sent to the island last month alone.

When asked if they would be able to survive on the island, Cha said there were a lot of food source on the island such as fish, crabs, lizards, snakes and wild boar.

He said the dogs were sent to the island to prevent them from being destroyed by the MPK.

When contacted MPK councillor in charge of Pulau Ketam Tee Beng Lee said residents had in the past caught and sent dogs to another island, which was nearer to the main island than Pulau Tengah.

“But the dogs kept swimming back and that is why they are being sent to an island which is quite a distance from Pulau Ketam,’’ he said.

SPCA slams MPK Klang exile plan for Klang dogs

M.Mail Monday, April 20th, 2009 07:33:00

ANIMAL activists have slammed a Klang Municipal council member’s move to send stray dogs to an uninhabited island.

SPCA chairperson Christine Chin was clearly irked by the matter.“Dumping these poor, helpless dogs on an uninhabited island is cruel.

“Without food, they will starve to death, or they may start cannibalising each other.

What happens if there is a disease outbreak on the island?

How can you leave them to slowly suffer and die?”

Last week, Klang councillor Tee Beng Lee took centrestage when he openly supported the act of Pulau Ketam residents — who shipped off stray dogs to a nearby island so that they do not have to be killed.

It was reported that Tee had used the money allocated to his service centre on the island to fund the dog-catching project — with the animals later shipped to an uninhabited island. An astonishing 400 — or about a fifth of the estimated 2,000 strays around Pulau Ketam — were caught in a month after the programme was launched.

It was learnt that residents were paid RM10 for a big dog, RM8 for a medium-sized dog and RM5 for a small dog trapped.

Chin said: “SPCA Selangor has written to the Department of Veterinary Services, asking it to intervene.

“This is just the wrong way of addressing the overpopulation of stray dogs on the island — it is short-sighted and inhumane.

“A long-term solution will be active sterilisation of the dogs to prevent them from multiplying further.

You will never solve the problem by just catching and disposing of them,” she added.

Kalau ya pun, it will be more humane to neuter all the dogs before sending them off so that they do not continue to breed and fight over a limited supply of food ... oops, Christine sudah cakap ... good!

Post Re: Pulau Ketam & MPK Klang Dump Dogs in Uninhabited Island

Malaysiakini on May 1, 09 4:33pm: Pulau Ketam dogged by stray canines

The residents of Pulau Ketam have been complaining for several years now of a huge population of stray dogs in the fishing island.

They have claimed that there were about 2,600 stray dogs in the two village settlements in this island, located just off Port Klang in Selangor.

And with the approval of the Klang Municipal Council (MPK), the villagers recently swung into action to get rid of the stray dogs - they caught the dogs and shipped them off to a nearby uninhabited Pulau Tengah. To date, they have trapped and abandoned about 400 stray dogs in Pulau Tengah.

While this could have solved their woes in the interim period, this is not the solution for the problem, said the Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals (SPCA) Selangor.

SPCA now wants to get into action to solve the stray-dog crisis for the villagers as well as save the dogs from the cruel treatment of being abandoned in an uninhabited island.

Working with Save The Strays (SAS), SPCA is looking at a "humane and holistic solution" to the Pulau Ketam stray dog crisis.

For starters, plans are being readied to recapture the abandoned dogs from Pulau Tengah, and arrange for temporary shelter for these dogs.

The dogs will then be neutered and re-homed, or relocated, said SPCA is a statement today.

Meetings arranged with village heads

Both SPCA and SAS also have plans to educate dog owners on the island and actively promote neutering for their pet dogs, to prevent the births of yet more unwanted animals. SPCA Selangor will sponsor the sterilisation charges.

"We hope to organise a meeting with relevant village heads to ascertain the residents' responsibilities and obtain their commitment to stop trapping and dumping of strays.

"Residents will also be urged to take responsibility of caring for the stray dogs by sterilising them," said the SPCA statement. SPCA also said that during a visit two weeks ago to Pulau Ketam with Department of Veterinary Services officials, its team members saw about 30 stray dogs during the daytime.

Villagers however have told them that the dogs only appeared when the tide came in and spent their time living beneath the houses and walkways which were built on stilts

SPCA Selangor chairperson Christine Chin said that stray dogs were a human problem and borne out of our negligence and irresponsibility.

SPCA strongly proposes spay/neuter of all owned pets to reduce the over-breeding of unwanted pets, she added.

"This is the most humane way to stop this overpopulation. Throwing dogs onto uninhabitable islands is cruel as these dogs will meet miserable and cruel deaths in time to come," she said.

Pulau Ketam, 2nd May 2009:

On Dire Straits.

Friends Daniel Tang and Sabrina Yeap of Furry Friends Farm accompanied the writer on this reconnaissance trip to "Dog Island", off the Straits Of Malacca. Blogger Birds Talking (from Klang) who followed the writer on the earlier negotiation trip was unable to follow due to some sudden illness. They chartered a boat and as they approached the island, the writer was thinking they would only get to see bones and carcasses. Poisonous snakes abound on the water clogged island and the hostile island will eat any ill-prepared intruder alive. The bountiful mud and sand will swallow you when you walk on it as the writer was to find out later.

Heartbreak. The sad face of this abandoned puppy sitting on a branch is heartbreaking and makes the writer and Sabrina all the more determined to go get every single remaining dog out from there.

Man-Made Tragedy. According to local fishermen, the starving animals resorted to cannibalism. They ate the carcasses of the fellow castaways who didn't survive. They were so desperate that they swam to nearby kelongs only to be chased away. Many weaker ones died in the water. They enlisted the help of a couple of Indonesian workers from a nearby kelong. They will also try to feed and trap the remaining dogs where possible. The writer is still formulating a proper method of delivering food to selected spots on this treacherous island. The writer hopes to be able to engage a local mangrove expert to enter the interior of the island to estimate the number of remaining survivors and to identify the places to land. Because the island is relatively remote, the rescue mission is a logistical nightmare

Dog's Eye View. As Sabrina clasped her hands in prayers, the writer too ended up needing some prayers. The writer was being sucked into hungry quicksand after getting off the boat to take this picture through the mangrove plants. After some struggling, the writer escaped with some cuts and bruises from the mangrove roots. His slight injuries are nothing compared to the unimaginable conditions and ordeal the dogs have to go through daily. The incident also serves to remind the writer of the difficult and dangerous mission ahead.

Saved and Safe. The rescued dog in the safe hands of Sabrina and on the way to a vet for treatment.

But time is running out and there might be only skeletons and carcasses left to collect on their next trip.

Boat hire is expensive there. It is a tourist area and it has already cost the writer a few hundred ringgit for boat hire alone, so far. The rescued dogs cannot be transported on the regular ferries. Almost nobody will lift a finger to help without a fee. This is understandable.

The locals are already shaking their heads in disbelief that there are outsiders who want to save the animals they so casually discarded.

Instead of pointing fingers and antagonising them, they needed their co-operation to help save the unfortunate creatures.

In the process, they also hoped to educate the islanders on better treatment of animals. It would have been an impossible mission if they didn't win their hearts.

The writer says:

If you are unable to help directly, please help by forwarding this appeal to other compassionate folks who you feel might be able to make some monetary contributions.

Apart from boat hire, we need money to buy cages, to pay people to help catch them, to hire land transport to send the rescued animals to veterinary clinics, pay for vet fees, send the recovered ones to the shelter and to feed and house them for life. I can go on!

To donate or help, e-mail TV Smith at tvsmith@mycen.com.my or Sabrina Yeap at yeapwen@yahoo.com

Fellow bloggers, you can also help by embedding this appeal poster on your blog and linking to http://www.mycen.com.my/rescue
