Exclamation How i prevent kitty from jumping off balcony?

Hello petlovers

How do i prevent my cat from jumping off balcony?

I live in 8th floor apartment with balcony and planning to adopt a cat. So i start with a 'trial cat' . Once i put him down ,he just walked swagly to neighbour's balcony on a very narrow ledge, almost giving me a major heart attack!!

My balcony is bar type (like prison bar). Even if i put netting or cover it with plywood he would still climb or jump onto on top of it.Can anyone help suggest a solution for safety of my cat?

Hi,

I remembered when i saw this one episode of 'my cat from hell' ( i couldnt remember the exact episode) , where jackson galaxy gives a tip to avoid the cat aka the client from jumping over the fence. ( so, a balcony may apply too perhaps?).. He said to install a 45 degree fence. Naturally, cats will avoid jumping over it. Maybe not a fence la but maybe you can find sumthing smaller n similar to fit the balcony. You get the idea right? It is something like in the picture. It is also called as the deterrence fence.

.

Hope this helps.

Hi posh_chiquita,

Is there a gate or sliding door leading to your balcony area, or is it permanently open?

My advice would be for you to net up the gate which leads to the balcony, all the way to the top (and yes, this means your cat does not get the chance to visit this area unless you allow her to). If there isn't a gate but only a sliding door leading to this area, then my advice would be to keep it permanently closed (again, unless you're supervising your kitty).

Don't forget the kitchen and bathroom windows/grilles too yes (get them netted up too). I've heard of cats that got too curious and snuck out through these/fell to their deaths, better safe than sorry.

Kudos to you by the way on the adoption plan and all the best with safety preparations for your current/future kitty! :)

Regards,
Nitha (Vee20)
