Default Helping my new furkid to behave

Any advise on helping my baby dino, latest rescued maltese behave? his background is he been caged since born until he is 1year old. He is in a pet shop near Happy Garden ( stated my friend ). So i ask my friend to have a look at him and she told me he is pitiful. Then i bank in money for her to buy the maltese. He is quick learner but one thing is he doesnt understand human language. When he want to poo and if u put him inside playpen with wee wee pad he doesnt go. But when you put him out he strait poo on the floor. And he likes to poo while walking. LOL And one more thing is he still doesnt like human touch his below body like stomach etc.. whats the problem and how to teach him? Thanks!

hi JyEn,

I just learn about this website and chance upon your posting.

Hope I am not too late in posting my reply to the issue you face with baby dino.

Potty Issue:
You mention in your posting that baby dino has been caged since born until he is 1year old. There is a possibility baby dino has learn not to eliminate in an enclosed area . The one year he has been caged has got baby dino to learn "when he poo in an enclosed area where he sleeps and play he has to step on his own poo and pee". You may want to either enlarge the area of the playpen so that after peeing and pooing in one part of the pen he can still sit/sleep/play in the other part or leave his crate inside his play pen where the crate will be his sleeping area and the pen will be his "attach toilet". (see sample on attach photo).

Stomach touch:
Not all dogs like "belly rubs" as some dogs see it as "forcing it into submission".
For dino to accept touches on the stomach start by rewarding the dog for body touches ie touch dog at various body parts and after each touch followed by rewards (such as doggie treats).
In this way dino will associate touches on it's body parts "= something good".

You mention dino doesn't like it , you may want to eleborate what you mean by "doesn't like it" ie how dino response when you touch his stomach (eg he move away, he growls, etc ? ).

Hope that helps for now. yawn... bed time

It is not advisable to let the dog pee or poo at the place where he is going to sleep upon. Like human, dogs love their cleaness on both themselves and they bed. Therefore, they will not ever pee or poo at their sleeping space.

There are some methods to try.

1. After he pees, wipe the urine with a towel/used cloth
2. Put the same towel at the place where you want him to pee
3. When he wants to pee (when he starts sniffing), faster carry him to the place where you put the tower.
4. Close him inside the place until he pees (you can stay there and watch too)
5. Praise him/give snacks if he pees there (VERY IMPORTANT).
6. Repeat the same until he memorise the place.

This method require time and patient. Sometimes it is sucessful, sometimes not. I have two dogs. One is trained with this method, another still refuse to be trained.

In fact, it is also important that you do not scold the dog too badly if he pees at the wrong place because for them, it is a very natural behavior. You can try to press his nose NEAR the urine/shit, and tell them NO NO, and softy pat their backside. DO NOT HIT THEM HARD!!!

Some dogs do not like their belly touched. Having dog bellies shown to you means that they are showing their "weakness" to you, giving you his total trust. The belly is the weak spot for animal, normally it takes time for an abused dog to accept you touching his belly.

You mentioned the dog has been caged since birth. Although it is not a direct abuse on the body, it is the abuse on the mind. Before that, the dog has no close contact with humans, therefore, he is scared and confuse. It takes time, for him to accept you. In fact, you should also try to talk to him most of the time. Touch him places where he allows you to. Give him food that he likes. Buy him toys. Treat him like a new born babe.

This is all i can suggest to you. I wish you luck.
