Default Can A Muslim Have A Dog?

bagi pandangan akak,yg non muslim tu nak pelihara anjing dan berpendapat anjing itu bersih, itu hak durang.kita jaga diri dan agama masing2. mmg susah utk durang faham sebab salahnya diri kita yg buat seolah olah islam tu susah.bila kita jelaskan dgn simple way baru nampak betapa mudahnya.

so,minta kwn2 tlg jgn raise issue agama kat sini.nanti gaduh lg

well,Clement,it depends. If you want to discuss religion and understand different religion we must open our mind. Open mind meaning if there are certain dos and don'ts in any religion weather islam, hindu, buddhist or christian we have to understand the reason why and respect each of the dos and don'ts. For the moment I'm learning abt Hinduism for my courses.I am a tour guide so I must prepare to answer question from tourists (mat salleh mostly) abt cultures and religion in Malaysia.

I know many non muslims feel that islam is difficult religion because that how it was potrayed. But honestly,it is not difficult. Trust me,my mum and dad are converted muslim. I can see that they are better than some muslims I know.Funny isn't it??

Anyway, all religion teaches us to be good human being, right??

Factually speaking there are very, very good reasons for not coming into contact with dogs, especially wet dogs and their saliva, this is how rabies is transmitted. In days of yore, rabies was prevalent in certain regions and predominately carried by dogs. So this really kept everyone safe and sound and prevented the spread of rabies. If we take this at face value, then this begs the question, in modern times, now that rabies is largely under control, shouldn't dogs also been seen in an equally modern light?

Exactly right Simon.

A lot of old texts and teachings and philosophy of the day may work for the day,.. however, it's also good to keep in mind that things are fluid and our environment changes everyday. What's good today may be bad tomorrow, etc...

Hukum Membela Anjing Sebagai Binatang Peliharaan
Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kutty

Terjemahan Isi:

Anjing boleh dibela untuk tujuan-tujuan yang berikut:

TitleMuslims Owning Dogs: Permissible?
QuestionDear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. Is it permissible for a
Muslim to own a dog? Is there any restriction on keeping the dog
inside the house? Jazakum Allah khayran.
Date 26/Jul/2003
Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Kutty
Answer
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake. May Allah reward you abundantly for your interest in knowing the teachings of Islam!

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior
lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, states:

“A dog can be owned for purposes such as the following:

1. A trained dog for hunting. Remember in Islam we are only allowed
to hunt for food; there is no such thing as hunting for fun, for we
are not allowed to kill or torture animals or drive them out of
their habitats for the fun of it.

2. A trained dog as a guide. This would be the case if a person is
blind and he/she has no choice but to keep a dog for essential
services. In this case, it is permissible for him/her to keep a dog
inside the house once it has been trained for service, but it is
still recommended that the dog have its own sleeping arrangement.

3. A dog trained for police duties.

4. A guard dog to guard houses or property.

5. A dog used by farmers to shepherd cattle and sheep.

We are, however, not allowed to keep a dog as a pet, since it is not
a very clean animal. How often have you come across the nasty sight
of dogs taken for a walk licking their own excrement? Isn’t it
disgusting to see their owners kissing the mouth of such animals
after such incidents as if nothing happened? Would you kiss the
mouth of your own baby if he were to do the same? Think how many
parasites and microbes may be hiding in their mouths.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has spared us from
being contaminated by such filth when he ordered us to stay clear of
the saliva of dogs. If we ever come into contact with a dog’s saliva
we must wash the spot seven times, the first of which should be with
sand or dirt. It is also possible to use a bacterial soap instead of
sand or dirt.

In conclusion: Don’t contemplate taking a dog home as a pet. If,
however, you do need to keep a dog for any of the reasons given
above, then you may do so. But take every precaution not to have
contact with its saliva, and also arrange for a separate living
space.”

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND........
Above is not Shareen's opinion, but she only translated the real text from English to BM (Am I right, Sha??). The real text came from a MUFTI. For those who don't understand, MUFTI means a highly respected and knowledgeable individu regarding Islamic law, rules and regulations. The name of the MUFTI is Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, and in this case, he seems to be a a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. For those who don't understand, this Sheikh is NOT GIVING HIS OPINION BUT IS STATING THE FACTS @ RULES OF KEEPING DOGS AND THE PROPER WAY TO CLEANSE THE NAJIS AS CITED IN THE QURAN. For those who don't understand, , NAJIS means dirty things (in this case will be the dog's saliva, poo & pee) and QURAN is the holy book for the muslims.
Hope this explanation will stop the fight and helps the misunderstand fella understands better
If still don't understand, then I will have to ask my son's help to write in chinese.....but he can only write in mandarin lorr. Apa macam ?

no point arguing people.. i would say dog ownership is a personal issue no matter what religion you practice.. there are religious AND cultural issues to consider. ultimately, how an individual practices his or her religion is between them and God. it isn't anyone else's business.

like sashy said earlier, there are lots of forbidden things that people still do. the forbidden things that are "fun" are very rarely avoided, eg. drinking and premarital sex.. forbidden things that aren't tempting anyway are very easy to avoid. for example, i'm a christian, i don't gamble coz it bores me anyway, but its easy for me to say i don't gamble coz its against my religion.. get what i mean? on the other hand i love to drink and party.. i'm not going avoid that just coz my religion says so.. i'm not religious anyway. so i don't observe many christian rules. i just live my life as long as i don't hurt others. me being a bad christian doesn't affect the "good" christians anyway.. so who cares what they think?

in conclusion, (hahhahhaha so formal), muslims and dogs: if you wanna own a dog as a pet, up to you!!!! some people won't approve but so what? they're not perfect either. between you and god anyway. remember, "only god can judge me".

Well said Kak Nita,
Its time to all of us learn to respect each other. Please before u type and publish your view. Rethink again what u said. Simply saying this person poison's people's mind without studying who and where she quoted from can cause many people feel uncomfortable, including me.

IV. Najisnya Air Liur Anjing

Just need to add a little bit...

"In the name of Allah the Most Kind"

It is narrated from Ibn `Abbas : Abu Talha, a companion of Rasullulah (SAW)and one of those who fought at Badr together with Allah's Apostle told me that Rasullulah said. "Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture" He meant the images of creatures that have souls.( Bukhari 5.338) ...

So I guess those who would rather have DOGS instead of ANGELS in their house go ahead.....

Yeah but just remember to samak after you hold the dog when it's wet or if you get it's saliva on you. Once you have done that, you can carry out your Muslim duties. Remember, it's okay to touch it when it's dry.
