Default FeLV

I was tested again. After Peterpan I thought I don't have to go through another sad episode with my cats. My Coklat aka Titan was confirmed FeLV positive by Dr Jon this morning. For the past 1 week she was unusually very quiet. Then last weekend she didn't want to eat, next losing weight and I call Dr Jon yesterday when her condition doesn't look good. So this morning I brought her to the clinic around 930am.At 12pm Dr Jon call and give the bad news. I cried the whole day in the office. I can't eat even though I'm hungry. I was crying while eating until kakak the stall owner asked me what's going on. I just came back from the clinic with my husband and Cokla was very happy to see us. I hope she will have fighting spirit like Peterpan. Dr Jon gave me an alternative option for medication which he called human transfer. I will try Reiki, gamat or any alternative medication to save Coklat. InsyaAllah.

I have bring ALL my house cat for blood test this Friday. So that I can isolate those cats confirm with FeLV beside Coklat.

June, I know how you are feeling right now.

I lost one kitten, Hung2 to FeLV many, many years ago. He was a healthy, playful little kitten, fat too... then one day, he kept to himself and refused to eat. Sent him to the vet, only to find out that he had FeLV.

At the end, we had to let him go.

I was just wondering if it is really necessary to test all your cats? I've read somewhere cats above 6 mths will have developed immune against FeLV. Also, high percentage of false positive that would require a repeat testing at certain intervals?

Stay strong!! Praying for Coklat recovery!

Default FeLV

Dr Jon asked me to test all the house cats so that I can already isolate them IF any of them infected by Coklat. As for now,I can see Mokmok and Daybonk already show the sign. I'm really really hope none of my other house cats didn't get infected from Coklat

Ramzee, FeLV takde ubat. Death sentence to the cat. Kita bagi ubat ubatan utk prolong life durang tp tak blh cakap berapa lama.maybe 2 days,2 mths,2 years. We don't know Tp Dr Jon kata pernah satu kali kes kucing tu tested positive with FeLV tp after 3 mths bila test lg jd negative. Tuan kucing menggunakan human transfer method. Maksudnya ada setengah ubat ubatan manusia berguna kepada animal tp kita tak tau sesuai sama kucing2/animal sebab never been tested secara formal. Yg kuicng tu kebetulan je.tuan dia cuba cuba kasih human transfer method dan sembuh.

Tks for the well wisher. tak tau nak kata dan buat apa lg.kita org mmg dah sedia nak put her to sleep but Dr Jon minta kita think it over. Td hubby call.dia pergi visit Coklat.Coklat dah mula makan sendiri dan ribut nak kuar dari kandang.

Dear June,

Please do not feel too devastated with the latest developments in Coklat, Mokmok, Daybonk or any others because as pet rescuers we are caretakers and guardians for the poor strays that are exposed to many unfortunate health problems passed on from birth and on the streets (pet shops and BYBs too, for that matter ... and legitimate breeders can also introduce problems through selective breeding). These precious and incredible animals enter into our lives for a very limited time period and in this limited time, leave a deep mark in our hearts and change our lives forever.

During that short time of special God-given privileged stewardship in our hands, we care for and love them, derive joy and pleasure in their happiness, well-being, humorous antics, as well as the love and affection they give us unconditionally in return.

Continue to enjoy the kids and treasure them with the full knowledge that everything on earth (their lives and ours) are only transient and temporary. Try not to cry or be sad (easier said than done, as I myself have cried much over our own loss as we wish that the time spent together were longer ... mcm tak puas-puas).

June, my personal feeling is that since all your kids are strictly indoor and have been together for a long time (kan?), the virus must have been present for quite a period, cuma the symptoms were not present until a time when the cat's immune system is stressed like neutering/vaccination/illness, etc. So, all the cats in your household would have been exposed to the virus already, so a scramble to isolate each cat or subject them to numerous car trips and visits to the clinic and investigative procedures like blood tests would not make much difference, but only serve to stress them much, much more and giving their immune system a good bashing in a most inappropriate time ... kalau the FeLV is newly aquired through a new cat baru lain cerita .... my 2-sen lah ...

But continuing to make the cats happy and not let them be stressed plus giving them lots of ayam rebus for good quality protein for their body system repair will definitely help their system to fight the virus.

Try not to transport them around any more than necessary because with cats being territorial, this will stress their system much and allow the virus to have the upper hand.

Take care, Sis ... be strong and enjoy all of them to the max while there is time ... one day soon there will come a time and place where we will be forever reunited with all our beloved kids for time eternal, and there will be no more separation and tears ....

When my Hung2 was diagnosed with FeLV, doc asked us to bring him home and make him as comfortable as possible. Doc said, we will know when it is time to let go.

The final one week, he had good days - running, chasing, playing with us, we were hopeful but, towards the end he became weaker, so weak that he can't even stand and open his eyes. I still remember at 8.30pm we drove with Hung2 inside a shoebox, first he was very quiet then he let out a faint "meow". (I know he was calling "mommy" )

When we were at the vet, he let out another faint "meow", doc administered the euthanasia solution. I couldn't help but cried throughout the procedure, then it became very, very quiet. I had this overwhelming feeling like Hung2 had been lifted up to heaven.

We buried him with his toys, kibbles in his favourite shoebox.

All I can say June, make Coklat as comfortable as possible. Try not to subject him to more test.

{{hugs}}

BTW, how old is Momok and Daybonk?

Bina,I cried even harder after reading your posting and FK I agreed wholeheartedly but I can't stop crying and blaming myself for not taking extra precaution for the sake of my cats.

I have to do extra work within this few days. I need to do spring cleaning and clean my house. BTW, Mokmok is 2 yrs old.Daybonk is nearly 1 yr.

June dear, please do not cry ... (although I myself cried as I typed the previous post and this one too) ... and please DO NOT blame yourself ... it is one of those things that happen in a life's journey ... theirs as well as ours ...

The virus can survive only about 2 hours in a dry environment, and about 48 hours in a damp environment (such as a litter box), so June, go about life as you have been doing all this months and years with the kids ... your house and you are clean enough and all the cats have already been exposed, some may even have developed partial or full immunity. For this reason also, DO NOT rush out and attempt to vaccinate your cats.

Here is some important findings on the FeLV vaccination:

Injection Site Sarcomas

In recent years, a disturbing phenomenon has been identified by veterinary researchers. A relationship has been found between feline leukemia virus vaccine (as well as rabies vaccine) and the development of very aggressive tumors at the injection site. The numbers of cats who have developed these tumors is very small compared to the total number of vaccinations given (1-3 per 10,000), but the outcome is devastating for cats that do get these cancers.

Several veterinary schools are actively researching this problem. It remains unclear exactly why some cats develop tumors in response to vaccination; a genetic predisposition is thought to be part of the problem. At this time, feline specialists are recommending that leukemia vaccination be reserved for cats that are at risk for exposure to the virus.

Strictly indoor cats generally do not need vaccination against FeLV. We can advise you about exceptions to the routine vaccination protocols.

"There is strong evidence kittens under 4 months of age are susceptible to infection, but by eight months are resistant - hence it is a good idea to keep young pet kittens indoors where virus exposure is minimal or non-existent until about 8 months of age".

Sedih, June ... yes, of course sedih, that is why I kata saya sendiri walaupun mulut cakap June jangan nangis, saya sendiri pun sedih dan nangis ...

June, the vaccine is not 100% preventive or protective. Also, it takes time and boosters to actually build up the body system to a level which can offer protection. Did you do any check on the immunity level built up? I doubt so, we just assume that once vaccinated the level of antibody generated is high enough and that we are safe and sometimes that is not the case. Also, if the vaccination boosters are not given in the optimum period, the protection level can be reduced and sometimes jadi none at all balik and you need to redo the whole process from step 1.
