being a student as well, i'd advice you to choose a dog with less maintenance...
having a dog is not just forking out the initial cost of buying a dog... you need to get him/her a crate/cage, doggy carrier, potty, wee wee pads, treats, FOOD (which can be expensive depending on brand), vet fees, vaccination, leash, shampoo, wet wipes, grooming fees, cushion, toys and most of all, time
when i first brought back my schnauzer pup... i spent rm 500+ on her, and i've been very very careful with my expenses. The only thing i did'nt think about saving money on is her puppy food and her visits to the vet.
I also own a miniature pincher, and he's the most economical dog ever... equally fun, active and great to be with. Great for students coz:
- He dont need grooming, which saves you rm 70-90
- he has no allergy problems, means he can take all kinds of doggy food, and use any type of shampoo
- he's happy with only 1 bone, no need toys
