Stray Cats Dilemma

Hi All,

I have been feeding some stray cats (currently there are eight) for the past 5 years and have neutered a couple of female cats since early this year to stop them from breeding.

Due to my job relocation, I will be moving out soon and I am afraid there won't be any good Samaritan neighbors to feed the strays when I am out of the neighborhood.

I thought of catching and release them at a nearby wet-market. I believe there will be plenty of left over food from some hawker stalls.

Do you think this is a good idea? Or, do you think SPCA would accept strays?

First, good on you for feeding and neutering these cats!

One question: Are the cats adoptable? In other words, are they friendly towards humans, and can you imagine them fitting into a home environment? If so, I would strongly encourage you to create adoption listings for them on the Petfinder main page.

Personally, I don't have good feelings about releasing them near the wet market/hawker stalls. Typically there are already many cats in these areas, and as you probably know, cats are fiercely territorial. If you bring "your" cats and leave them there, they're likely to be attacked by the cats who are already in the area. Second, we hear so many terrible stories about cats scalded by hot water or soup thrown by frustrated vendors, or cats who are injured or killed by meat vendors' knives.

SPCA Selangor is rebuilding their shelter, so they can't take in stray animals now. If you feel the cats are adoptable, you might call PAWS in PJ to ask if they have space.

Meanwhile, talking with neighbours to see if anyone would continue feeding the community cats would be another idea.

Some cats are quite fierce even though I have been feeding them for years. I am not in a good term with my neighbours ever since they asked me to stop feeding the strays. I doubt they would continue feeding them after I leave. Most likely, they would rather poisoning then feeding the strays. Very sad to see the strays ended up "homeless".
