Spaying and Vaccine

Hi guys,

After endless hours of discussion with family, we decided to give Ton Ton a permanent home. [A stray cat I tried desperately to Re-home] She was the weakest of all the cats. I already have 2 male cats indoors, and my budget is really tight. For food only I spend about RM200 a month. My 2 cats will not eat dry food, I have to mix it with canned food. Plus I feed a lot of stray cats. Not only in my area, but wherever I happen to see one, I'll feed them.

Anyway, I am going to spay Ton Ton soon, but, my regular vet said you have to Vaccine + Booster first before the operation. Is this really necessary? I mean, I absolutely will vaccine her, but I need time to save up. And I don't want her to be in heat for her surgery. I don't want to wait any longer. Poor thing lost her babies the last time.

I neutered my 2 male cats for RM150 each. Vaccine + Booster, RM90 per cat. De-worm is RM10. For 2 cats, it's OK. I can still afford it.

I know about Kembiri Clinic, but I don't know the way there. I want my cats to be regulars at one vet. I've been to Petcare in Taman Melawati for a long time! They know about our rescue work, and they know my family and cats very well. :)

Anyway just wanted to know if Vaccination is necessary before spaying a cat? Fleas and ear-mites are under control. Cleaned her up a few hours ago, finally had some free time to do so.

Would love to hear some advice from you guys. Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question about vaccination being required before spaying, but I might suggest this:

If you find that you do need to vaccinate first, and Ton Ton will enter another heat cycle before you can spay her, you might ask your vet to provide a birth control pill for this one cycle. I hadn't known such a thing existed until I read about it here in another thread. It's not good for the health of the cat to use it over the long term, but might be a solution to keep Ton Ton from getting pregnant again before you can spay her.

Sorry, Maneki, NO birth control pills or jabs for Ton Ton please.

First and foremost, you mention that Ton Ton is the weakest of your cats. If her health is not good, either vaccination or the spaying operation which will stress her body greatly has a risk of killing her.

Your first priority for some time is her health, not spaying nor vaccination.

Do feed her well with good premium kibbles to restore her health first. She will not get pregnant if she does not come into contact with an unneutered male and you can make sure it does not happen at all by confining her in a reasonably sized cage all the time, never allowing her to slip outdoors unnoticed by you. Never mind the noise she makes while in heat and captivity, if you really want to save her life. What is some noise and inconvenience ... just bear with it till she is really healthy and has gained a good amount of body weight. Give her lots of juicy, lightly steamed chicken breast meat to build up her muscles.

As for the vaccinations, she will not pick up anything new if you do not bring home any new sick cats. As for your existing home environment, if it habors any sickness, in the 2 weeks since Ton Ton's arrival into your home, she will have picked it up and show symptoms already. As such, vaccination will not help her against your existing home infections except to unnecessarily stress her immune system further and make her more sick. You need to understand how vaccination actually works.

So, living under such circumstances in your home, you actually do not need to rush out to vaccinate Ton Ton regardless of what that vet says. Anyway, you cannot vaccinate a weak or sick cat. It can actually kill her off faster!

Many cats with hidden sickness unnoticed by their owners because the animals had appeared ok actually died after receiving vaccination because the sick animals' immune system had actually been weakened by the sickness in them and the vaccination's additional stress on their already weak immune system caused them to lose the important fight and die.

ONLY when Ton Ton is completely healthy and strong, do you FIRST spay her. And only a couple of month when she has fully recovered from the stress of the major operation (yes, for a female it is a major operation, can you imagine a human undergoing a major operation?) do you start considering vaccinating her. Understand?

Taman Melawati is very near Setapak where Klinik Kembiri is located. Look for the Pizza Hut at the main road to get to the side road turning leading to the clinic. Once turning in, look out for the bright coloured fire brigade (bomba in malay) building on your left and take the small turning on your right to the clinic.

Oops, Neems, I'm sorry! When you said that Ton Ton is the weakest of your cats, I thought you meant she was unable to defend herself against stronger strays and was getting bullied.

If you mean that her health is weak, Furkids is absolutely right. Get her into top form before either vaccinating or spaying.

Furkids, Thank you for your advise. I will take Ton Ton to the vet at 4pm today.

Maneki Neko, I meant she's weak as in, she's lonely and unable to defend herself from other female cats or male cats. As soon as I brought her indoors from yesterday night, she has been exploring and playing non stop. I mean, I can never be sure if she's healthy or not right? I was juat excited to see her doing better, and wanted her to feel better too. :)

I did cage her for the night, I wanted to see her Poo and Pee, if anything was wrong there. I fed her Orijen, she loved it, but she had diaherra after and it was all over the cage. It might be something else? But anyway, I will be taking her to the vet in 2 hours for a full checkup.

I have another problem though, I've read about introducing your cats to a new one. One of my cats, Moki, will always try to be near to her and play with her, but she hisses at him and scratches him. He even slept beside the cage where I put Ton Ton. As for my other cat, Mo Mo, he hates it when shes around. They will sit infront of each other but if they go any closer, hisses all around. Sometimes Ton Ton will just watch Mo Mo and Moki play, sometimes she does not hiss at them at all.

I will ask the vet for advice, she helped me alot before with cat behaviours. :)
