Default Cat getting spayed. How to care for it?

Hi guys,

I'm getting my cat spayed on Thursday and I'm really nervous on what will happen after I take her home

1) How do I care for her? Any special diets?
2) I don't have a cage. Is it necessary?

What I'm most worried about is that she will act differently after getting spayed. Will her personality change?

Please advise

Do not feed her food or treats the night before surgery !!! Just let her have water. Usually the cut off time is around 8pm.

Basically, the first 24 hours or so after the op she will be a bit drowsy and she will probably want to sleep the whole day. This is quite normal. Make sure that she doesn't lick the wound part, it will cause an infection. The best is let her use an Elizabeth collar.

After the op, no food until the next morning, just restarts the food slowly, a bite here and there and small amount of water too.

Oh yeah, one of the recommendations is to keep her from jumping as much as possible as the surgical site is healing...yeah right!...but do the best you can.

As for the personality, she may become calmer.. anyway, it will somewhat change as they grow older.

P/s I got my Bobby fixed 2 months ago.. well, he is still playful and naughty like before...

Hi Casis,

Thanks for the tip. I can only give her attention for a day or two after the op because I'll have to go back to work. I hope she'll be okay on her own.

Did you keep Bobby in a cage after the op?

Usually, keeping them in a cage after op is one of the most safest choice if you were to go out. Because this is to prevent them from jumping :)

Yes, only 2 days in the cage with an E-collar/cone on for 5 days when I’m not around in the daytime. On the 3rd day, I just let him wandering around in the house. I also sprayed Fido Anti-Bacteria Cat Spray every morning and night at the wound area to avoid from infection and gave him Multivitamin & boiled chicken to please him.

I would recommend you to get the E-collar (you can ask from the vet) to prevent her from licking or chewing at her incision area and put her in the cage. If your cat walking backwards after wearing the E-collar don’t worry, this is normal. As for the incision area, just check her belly in the morning and the evening to make sure no stitches have come out, no puss, no swelling or bleeding. If you see otherwise, please call the vet soonest possible.

So don’t worry, she will be fine and give her lots of attention and love… good luck!

Yes, I'll be getting the e-collar from the vet.

Oh dear...I don't even have a cage Now I feel like leaving her at the vet for a day since they also provide boarding.

I wonder if there's a place to rent a cage since it's really not necessary for me to buy one.

Aww...he looks so tired :3

Where do you stay, Meffy?

I can rent it to you if you want since I hardly use it. Only when he's grounded

owh..i dont have a cage..last time (1 year back) i spayed Bubuye. i am damn so so nervous. as we do not have cage, i put her in the room that only have mattress(only the mattress on the floor)... i tried my best to ensure my BUbuye did not move to much..at 1st nite, she's a lil but drowsy...buat after 3 days, she become better..i wait until 2 week to remove the suture.

after 1 year, she become super duper lazy(main reason she become fat) + fussy but very manja......

Ok...I just came back from the vet. My cat HATES the collar and she managed to remove it on the way home. I put it back on her and she growled at me but I made her wear it. After being angry for about 5 minutes, she fell asleep.

She looks very kesian....I feel so bad

@anizarina : How old is Bubuye now? I'm worried my cat will change a lot after this.

@Casis : Do I have to keep the e-collar on 24/7?

she almost 2 years now...the changes will happen slowly..tiba-tiab she look damn so fat....until the vet thought she's pregnant..ahahhahaha....

i did not put any collar after spayed her as i dun want her to move too much during struggling to open the collar...i just let her choose the best and most comfortable place to sleep...the vet advise me just to make sure Bubuye did not jump here n there sgt.

i myself feel damn so bad when 1st time spay/neuter my cat... she was like mabuk2 macam tuh..cannot walk...no apetite to eat for 1st 2 days, just want me to be beside her...

after Bubuye, i gain more confident, and i feel very relief after my 2nd cat being neutered. Taking care a newly neutered male is more n more easier than taking care of the newly spayed female.( I think lah).. Now I am waiting for my other 2 female cat to get spayed..hehe..

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I can only monitor her for today and tomorrow. After that, I have to be away for 2 days and then it's back to work.

Right now, she can walk around but still don't like the collar. Her eyes also look watery. I want to take out the collar but risau nanti dia usik tempat jahit pulak. Nanti infection kena gi vet lagi

It's been 10 hours after her surgery. My cat is able to walk around better and I notice she's been hopping on her usual small chair to lie down. I fed her some food which she ate with no problem

Still looks sad and eyes are glazed. Still don't like the collar but dealing with it It doesn't fit very well (too big) so instead of staying around her neck, it hangs around her face when she walks.

I'll update on her status tomorrow morning. Hope she feels better then.

Hi Meffy,

I'm happy to hear that she's okay. Don't worry about the E-collar. My cat hates it and keeps walking backwards when I put the E-collar..

This is temporary only and for her own good as well so that she will heal faster.

Try to use your kitty collar with bell and run it though the holes in the E-collar. Then put the E-collar over the cat head and just tight the collar with bell enough to hold, but loose enough to let your kitty breath and move as freely as possible.

I hope I explained it well enough.

Hi Casis,

It's been over 12 hours and she's okay. She already started playing...just a little clumsy and she even jumped on the TV again! My cat doesn't wear a kitty collar that is why they use a string to hold the e-collar in place. I'll buy her a nice kitty collar next time ^_^

She looks so miserable just now so I took off the e-collar. Immediately, she went for the surgical site so I had to put it a back on. 5 days seems like a long time to wear it.

I wonder how some cats can go without it. Don't they lick the stitches?

Baiknya Bubuye :3 Tadi ade bukak collar jap masa die nak makan...just to give her a break. Tapi die usik stitches lagi...macam tarik2 pulak. So pakai balik la. I think she got used to it by now cuma I je yg susah hati tengok die mcm tu.

But Bubuye's stitches are small compared to my cat's. Hers is about 1.5 inch long.

Hm...one of her eyes feels uncomfortable. She's blinking that eye a lot.
