Hi, Coony and DIMB --
Thank you for posting this, especially to remind people of the extra care and expenses involved with many pedigreed pets, both cats and dogs.
I strongly agree with Coony's advice:
Do your research!
When facing the decision of pedigreed vs. mixed-breed dog, it's not only a factor of money. You also need to be aware that pure-bred dogs are far more likely to have congenital (inherited) health problems: hip dysplasia, glaucoma, skin disorders, etc. Buyers should educate themselves about a particular breed, and learn how to shop for healthy pups. A puppy may look healthy and energetic and be vaccinated against common diseases, but that is no guarantee that it won't be blind or crippled in a few years. If the breeders don't know or care about genetics, the dogs (and unwary buyers) suffer.
I admit, I know nothing of congenital disorders in pedigreed cats. Coony, can you share any info on this?
