Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
hi lynie
they look great and their condition bespeaks the love and care you lavished on them
how are they coming along now and how is mama cat? do you have an estimate of how far along she is?

Ashley, everything is horribly wrong. Mama cat was never pregnant. She was in heat. She escaped again last saturday when my housemate left the door open. Since then i have seen her mate with 5 toms. She is definitely pregnant now. I can't catch her. She's still sowing her wild oats and refuses to come home or eat. I see her everyday surrounded by a large group of toms. They go everywhere together. When she sees me coming she looks at me and quickly skips away knowing i want to bring her home. More bad news, socks also escaped. It happened sunday afternoon. She was adopted by a very nice lady i chose out of several potential adopters. Very patient person and understanding about socks' fears. Managed to put socks in her carrier. Then as she stepped out of my house the carrier door broke and flung open. Socks dashed away. She's come home everyday since then but won't come in and won't let me catch her. Just hangs around outside by my car. I leave her food in the carrier everyday. Am hoping to trap her that way again but so far she seems to remember that's how she was caught in the first place. I don't know what to do.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
I'm heartbroken. Have spent the last three nights outside on the curb and even lying down on my driveway waiting for her to show up. I can hear her cry. She has not reunited with mama. Mama no longer cares. I have seen her walk past socks without a second glance. She does not respond to her cries like she used to. Socks is alone but is too afraid to let me get near. She has totally regressed to her feral ways. More sad news, a friend called me last night asking me to pick up a kitten she found in the middle of the road. As i was driving to her place to pick up this kitten i saw another one, curled up in a tiny ball in the middle of the LDP highway during rushhour traffic. Cars drove past her and even over her. Her tiny body almost grazing their car tyres. I stopped my car and ran out. Luckily the car in the next lane saw the kitten and stopped. I picked her up. Poor baby was filthy and shaking and bleeding from her nose mouth and left ear. Rushed to my friend's place one minute away to pick up the other kitten and took them both to the vet. Ugh what a day.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
Hi lynie
i admire you for your inner strength and fortitude in helping these cats and their kittens even when in dangerous situation. i'm not sure i can do that.
now about socks. i'm sorry that socks dashed away. that lady must have forgotten to ensure the door locked carefully in the carrier.
from the pics you posted, socks was kept in a cage for her socialising purpose, therefore she'd may or may not recognise another cage. she'd definitely recognise a carrier cage now having escaped from it. do you have extra cage or can i lend you mind?
i was thinking that you put it outside at your porch and set it up so there's water in the cage and newpaper padding so at least socks knows it's a shelter of some sort.
put food inside to entice her and to familiarise her with the cage but only put food inside when you're home to monitor and supervise. we don't want everycat in the neighbourhood making a beeline to your house for free food and scaring poor socks away.
i think you have put the problem of mama cat aside. unless she comes back to your house for food, you won't have a chance of re-capturing her again. not her fault - she's driven by her instinct and hormone. poor her. at least she'd know how to take care of herself. if she does come back to you for food, to leave food out for her so she has some sustenance. if she comes back to you, it's a good sign that you'll once again be able to hold on to her.
what i learned is to work with what you have - the kittens you have on hand, especially socks. you have manage by sheer dint of your strength determination and willpower you have succeed in showing them a promise of a loving home. don't give up now.
do you need extra cages? i have two empty right now, my ginger boy has recovered from his neutering surgery and no longer needs a cage. nicky is no longer being quarantined although he's still on medication.
hmm, i have it. one cage may be too short and small to contain a jittery kitten inside. how about a "longer cage" with only one opening at one end? possible?
i have tied both my cages together so that it's extended in length. if you can set it up at your porch and keep one door closed, then the other opening will be easy for you to control - especially if socks goes in to the other end to eat then you shut the other door -and voila, socks is under lock again.
another option is if socks still wants to play with you. try to entice her into the carrier cage, secure her interest with some interesting toys so you can shut the door on her. works in theory - worth trying.
i do understand the burden - both emotional and financial - we find ourselves under when we are operating "solo". that's why i admire your fortitude in forging ahead but sometimes we do need to be realistic in our effort
continue with the rest of the kittens while keeping an eye out for socks. you have managed to keep them out of the streets and that's good that should be the priority now.
if mama cat do come home to you, then the next step would be 1) either to get other people to fosters the kittens while you focus your attention on mama cat and her future litter or 2) integrate the kittens with the rest of your cats in your house and letting mama cat have the cat room to herself this means she won't be caged up 24/7 and she won't be stressed to the point of wanting to escape. she wants to feel safe and won't share her space with other cats even her own kittens from previous litter.
hope this helps, maybe not. i've been longwinded as usual

Yeah very tough! Even with the string and carrier idea, she knows when the string is being pulled. Even though i tried to pull and be fast and quiet. I think she can feel the door closing and see the string move. It worked when i tested on my own cats but socks is much faster and more alert and paranoid. Today i tried a 2 meter long string and i hid behind bags of garbage, still she got away! 3 times failed today. Then i gave up coz wanna give her to eat peacefully. At least she's getting food. Any new ideas are most welcome.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
you wanna use my cages? they're still tied and extended for more room length wise. better than a short cage.

I'll try anything! Long cage like that will give more time to close door. If i put food right at the back, the string thing might work!

i'll bring it to you this weekend then? saturday, pls PM me your personal email and i'll make arrangements through your personal email or PM via this forum.
i may have to take the cages apart to fit into my car and you'll need to put them back but i'll bring along the tie-wire in case you need it.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
Wow, Lynie, I really do admire the strength and determination you have. I'm especially touched by your stopping the car along LDP highway and rescuing the poor kitten there. It's so sad and heartbreaking each day to see needless deaths on the road. But I'm not sure if I would be brave enough to dash out on the highway to pick up the poor kitten. I hope I would be though, if that day happens.
Good luck in catching socks. Poor socks. She must be so terrified, with her mama ignoring her and she not trusting you enough to let you take her home.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
Mama is so mean. She's not just ignoring socks. Yesterday i saw mama in the street. Socks walked up to her and meowed. Mama responded by hissing and almost smacking her.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
I'm sad. Mama's also acting like she doesn't know me. When i call her she barely glances my way and then walks away. No more flopping over at my feet and rubbing her head against my hands. No more exposing her belly for a rub. I miss her! And must admit my feeling's are hurt. But even if i could catch her today, i have no room for her. No empty cages. No more litter boxes. I'm coping ok. If socks is caught this weekend she can be immediately rehomed. And a lady who adopted one of my foster kittens, pepper now known Mandy, is interested in adopting another one of my foster kittens. Cross your fingers, 2 kitties will be off to good homes this weekend.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
hi lynie

here's a for you! that's the nearest to hugs icon i can find here..
ezer/andy if you're reading this, we need more hugs icons!
okay, i'll write you a nice email tonight asking about your address and direction..or have you given it to me once before? i can't recall i'm having short memory lapse nowadays
i'm excited for you, don't worry too much about mama...that's a different issue altogether, we'll deal with it later..
i wish i can help you with the foster kittens but my hands are full with nicky, coco and ginger. i wonder whether i've over-pampered them, they're all being prima donna now . the looks each give me as i praise and fuss over the other, if looks could freeze....

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
What??!!
Why is she hissing at her own kitten? I don't understand nature in this case.

Re: Need help with taming feral kittens
in nature, at certain age, the kittens will be "asked" to move on to live their own lives - mother cats do this instinctively. expert says this is to prevent "inbreeding" and also to "spread the gene pool".
my own cats, when their mom dumped them at our house, she exhibited the same behaviour, hissing at them, striking out at them, snarling and trying to chase them away. i had no choice but to chase her away because it's either she or the 4 kittens. she's already a street cat but her kitten weren't at that time. sadly that was the time my kittens learned how to hiss and snarl at each other.
they can't help it, they're driven by their instinct and their genetic makeup it's not liek they're being cruel, animals are never ever cruel intentionally like the way humans are.
