Default Top 10 Puppy Accidents and Accident Claims

Dogs and puppies get into trouble all the time. Pets are like kids - accidents happen all the time so it's good to be prepared.

Anyone who's ever brought home a new puppy knows the seemingly endless amounts of energy and curiosity that come with these furry additions to the family. Unfortunately all of that playing, running, jumping and sniffing around can sometimes lead to serious accidents.

Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, recently looked at its database of more than 480,000 insured pets to find the top ten accidental injuries suffered by dogs during the first two years of their lives. Here they are:

Top 10 Puppy Accident Claims

1. Soft Tissue Trauma
2. Laceration or Bite Wound
3. Cruciate Ligament Injury
4. Sprain
5. Insect Bites and Stings
6. Abrasion
7. Torn Nail
8. Eye Trauma
9. Drug Toxicity
10. Oral Cavity Trauma

These are all costly problems to treat. I talked to a few veterinary hospitals to get the average costs for these problems and they are as follows.

Top 10 Puppy Accident Claims

1. Soft Tissue Trauma - $188.00
2. Laceration or Bite Wound - $238.00
3. Cruciate Ligament Injury - $1,624.00
4. Sprain - $108.00
5. Insect Bites and Stings - $104.00
6. Abrasion - $88.00
7. Torn Nail- $84.00
8. Eye Trauma- $124.00
9. Drug Toxicity- $524.00
10. Oral Cavity Trauma- $260.00

Please protect your dog and do your best to keep him or her out of trouble. Keep trashcans covered, nails trimmed, and all medications out of reach - and keep your dog on a leash.
