dynamitee, 1stly welcome to petfinder, 2ndly please be known the reason petfinder was formed, is to decrease the amount of strays around us by having lovely home for all the strays, petfinder really would not encourage on breeding, unless there is no more strays around us (which will be impossible if we keep on breeding), spay your dog, correct me if im wrong petfinder universe and dynamitee, please dont take this personally, it is better for the world that we are living

yes, i understand ur point..i love dogs very much..i've formed a small group with my friends on a campaign in my college to stop stray animals and encourage adoption..so i know wat u're talking about..

n i love my dog..he's part of the family..n i would like to have his baby as well..i hope this isn't greediness, itz juz love..n i believe dat every animal would somehow come to a point in their lives where they would want to reproduce..of coz there r many strays dogs n cats around, i agree, but i would not want dat 2 happen to my dog's babies..juz my thoughts, no offense, really..

mine's a male salt & pepper miniature schnauzer of 3 yrs old..

Let's say your dog studs a female and has 5 babies, how many can you keep? With one dog that you rehome/sell there will be 1 more homeless dog out there. And let's say you have kept one of your dog's baby. Then you might want to keep that son's baby too. And it goes on and on. When is it going to end? Or do you mean that you will only love your current dog so much that you want the baby and will not love the baby as much?

Secondly how sure are you that you can find very good homes for all the babies? Can you guarantee that the new adopters will keep them for the next 10-15 yrs? Also are you sure that both your dog and the future female dog is totally free from any inherited problems? What if your dog happens to be the carrier and it is not a problem to you now? Then the pups comes with health issues? What are you going to do with the pups? Can you keep all of them? Have you seen complications of giving birth? My friend's dog just died due to complications when giving birth and she regrets that she did not take my advice to spay her dog from 2 yrs ago. Consequences on that her dog left the world due to delivery issues. What if the pup are delivered nicely but they refuse to drink milk? Do you want to watch them die one by one or stay up to feed them every 2 hrs daily?

Lastly strays nowadays are not only mongrels. I have seen a rotty which is a stray and is still there roaming the streets up till today. Abandoned dogs nowadays are more to pedigrees already. In the past 2 months I have taken in 8 pedigrees puppies below 1 yr old. And one of it is a salt and pepper MS. Soon you will see more of my postings of pedigrees available for adoption. You decide to help a homeless dog out there or to create more homeless dogs.

Default Re: How to find partner? Breeding dogs

I symphatise with Dynamitee's query but wonder if this forum or thread has over-reacted. Admittedly, a forum dedicated to rescuing unwanted pets is not normally a good place to ask about finding a breeding partner.

There are many dog-lovers who breed and do so for many reasons, not the least of which is to improve the breed. If it is done to have more pups/dogs of the line that you desire - that is fine. It is your choice to do so.

If, however, it is done so you may call yourself a breeder without having gone through the details of WHY you want to breed a particular dog(s), then you are just creating more misery in this world.

From my experience, to breed and do it well, the owner has to go through several steps and still ask that moral question - am I really improving the breed, or is it for something else?

Steps to take:

1. BEFORE BREEDING - Physical Requirements
Complete Health Screening.
# Radiographs of Hips and Elbow
# Heart & Lungs
# Skin & Coats
# Limbs & Joints
# Nervous System
# Vaccinations

2. BEFORE BREEDING - Social / Breed Character Requirements
Complete Temperament Testing
# Hunt / Prey Drives
# (substitute your requirement for your breed)
# Training Ability

3. AFTER BREEDING - Better Temperament and Training Ability
(redo step 1 at appropriate time)
Complete Puppy Imprinting and Care
# Social Behavior & Confidence
# Environmental Stress
# Proper nutrition from weaning to adoption/sale
# Find suitable home - adoption or sale
# Ensure the pups are brought up according to your expectations.

If Dynamitee' can meet these expectations of a good breeder, then I don't think he should be stopped. If he cannnot, then Dynamitee should acknowledge he may not have the knowledge or resources to breed properly.

My suggestion for anyone else who may think they know what, why, when, etc about dogs is to read Steven Lindsay, here.

PS. Steps suggested by me above are not absolute, nor secret. They are generally available info and I adapted it from someone.

Wink Re: How to find partner?

miket, there is no point in arguing who is right and wrong, the point of the matter is what and why petfinder is created in the first place, everyone has their own opinions and we just have to be open to it, to breed or not to breed is in your own hands, to save the strays or not is in your hands as well.

hourus, I believe you wanted to say dynamitee is entitled to breed his pet dog and I should not tell him otherwise. If that was what you meant to say, that is exactly what I said.

Of course, I added the points on what is required of a good breeder. How is this an argument?
