Oh, shame on the vet! At the bare minimum, cats should get vaccinated for the panleukopenia and feline flu (both vaccines administered in one shot). The first year, a booster is given 3 weeks after the first, and then one shot a year going forward.
I just had a chat with my vet about these vaccinations, and he repeated how important it is to keep them up-to-date
every year, since both viruses are common and, as you discovered the hard way, often fatal. If the cats do survive, it's at the end of a long, expensive ordeal at the clinic. Much less costly to vaccinate!
