Default How to feed deworm tablet to stray cats?

I have 5 strays cats which I tried to deworm. I had tried pounding the tablets and mixed with can food. They refused to touch the food. Please help.

I do the same thing for stray cats, they seem to love it!

What brand and type of can food are you using? Is it Tuna?

Errr......my method is slightly more barbaric.

I grab my cat's head, hold it tightly with two fingers pushing against the side of the mouth. This opens up the mouth, then I insert the pill-popper in, squirt, and close the mouth immediately, forcing it to swallow.

But, it's easier said than dance. There's a lot of tango ongoing between us before I finally manage to succeed. Sometimes takes as long as 15 mins. :)

P/s: Oh yeah, I forgot. There's a paste version, it's yellow in colour. But I think this is slightly on the bitter side, judging from my cat's reaction after feeding it.

The palatable form of the gold standard Drontal is not yet available in Malaysia, unfortunately. I always invest time to befriend my strays so that I can touch them to pop the tablet or apply any medication required.

Thanks for all the suggestion. I have tried with tuna and various types of fish. We have no problem holding or carrying them, but they just refuses to open their mouth.

Keep stroking and talking gently to them (you must be very calm and loving, they can sense tension or anxiety), then gently scruff them with their body against the floor, tilt head upwards and the mouth will open slightly, then gently push the lower jaw open a little wider, pop the pill deep down the throat and the moment the mouth closes in reaction, stroke the throat several times to stimulate swallowing and then release the cat calmly. Immediately follow up with a small piece of reward like boiled chicken or tuna.

Do not press the jaw joint too hard as it can easily get dislocated. Some people do that to force the cat's mouth open. I never have to touch the cat's jaw joint at all, just tilt the head upwards and the mouth will open automatically.
