Hi, Ed, and thank you for rescuing this lost pup and trying to find his owner! {good}

I don't like to be untrusting, but we've read so many stories on PF lately of pedigreed dogs being stolen or dog-napped, then sold or used in puppy mills. I worry that an unscrupulous person may contact you claiming to own this shih tzu. Do you have any question you might ask of people to determine whether he really is their dog? Something that only the owner would be able to answer?

I hope you can find his real owner, and if not, find him a home with someone who genuinely loves dogs. Good luck!

yea was thinking about that as well but i will think of something. On the surface probably the dog would recognized the owner or call by his name. Need to figure out some questions though. Is there anything u can help me with?

You mentioned that there was a bell on the collar. Maybe you could ask a caller to tell you what color the bell is. You wrote that the dog had a brown & white collar, so you might ask what the collar is made of. Nylon? Leather? Otherwise, does the dog have any scars or marks that distinguish him?

As you said, you'll probably be able to tell when the dog sees his real owner again, but asking the questions might weed out some dishonest people before they show up at your home. Gee, I hate being so suspicious, but it just gets reinforced every time I read another account of a dog getting stolen or falling into the hands of unscrupulous people. {ohmygod}
