Default The Dreaded Mushy Poo

Warning: I am going to talk about poop!

So, I know that cats sometimes have diarrhea, and that if it persists you should take them to a vet.

Here's my dilemma, I have a cat that has not quite runny diarrhea but intermittent "cow patties"..and every time I think we should take her to the vet, her poo sort of gets better. It's not completely firm like her brother's or her mother's, but it will range from mushy cow patties to semi-firm toothpaste tube-like poop.

She's been vaccinated, dewormed and spayed. We've tried looking at diet, avoiding new situations that could be stressful, and giving her probiotics. There would be some improvement...and then after a few weeks, it'd swing back to cow patties again.

Other than that, she seems just fine. She poos about once a day, pees about twice.. which is average with her mom and brother. She's also active and has a good appetite.

I've been researching and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with their cats being diagnosed for giardia or T. Foetus or anything related to their cat diarrhea? I wanted to know what the vet experience was like ... do I need to bring a stool sample ? Do the vets here know about T. Foetus here (it's apparently relatively new)?

Hi Scribbles,

Rest assured, talk of cat poo is always welcome on the Petfinder Forum!

I do think you should take the cat to a vet. Bringing a fecal sample wouldn't be a bad idea, and also mention your suspicions about giardia or T. Foetus.

Where do you and your cats live? Perhaps members can recommend reputable vets based upon your location. Please do keep us posted if you learn anything new about this poo dilemma. Thanks!

Oh, yes, please!

We're in Petaling Jaya. Their current vet is a single-vet clinic on Bukit Gasing and I trust him with their vaccinations, etc, but this seems more like a exploratory diagnostic situation and he's not really inclined for that.

Any ideas on how to get a fecal sample? Because her poo is mushy, it mixes up with the litter very easily and none of the cats seem to like to do their business without the litter.

(If anyone wants tips on collecting pee samples, though, I recommend the swoop-in-and-catch technique! Poo is a little harder, though.)
