Default Rescue Dogs

Hi Everyone.... was wondering if anyone out there knows about rescue dogs? The reason i ask is because i sometimes work in rescue, many times, mostly underwater situations I am a trainer (human not dog yet). I have been toying with the idea of trying to train a dog in rescue to use for this purpose. I have read that it is possible to train a dog to sniff out drowned victims etc. I would very much like any info on that anyone else can come out with on the subject. I know it will be hard given the restriction on dogs cause of religion but I am confident that if I can train up a dog as a pilot project and the dog can perform it will be well received. Am think of doing it independently for now. Means me and dog working together alone but if it works, we would safe a lot of work and resources in the end. Its a long shot and a long long road....... I know in the states and Europe lots of dog are used in rescue.... share your thoughts with me?

Wow, where's your work place? Kastam near Jalan Besar? Navy base in Pelabuhan Kuantan? May I know what breed u are going to use? Ur dog needs to be a perfect swimmer as he/she would have to counter waves and tides when performing rescue work.

Hi are you from Kuantan??? Nope neither one of those organizations... but work closely with NAVY diving team sometimes. Don't think Kastams involved in diving. Though they do have cool jet boats that we've been on.
Not sure what breed, but most likely smaller dogs, as i need to make sure i can carry the dog if need be. I think all dogs can swim, but the dog will not be required to swim much. As long as you get a dog used to water from an early age it will be fine. Also thinking of the short fur types. Some of my Malay friends will touch and play with my dog as long as he is not wet. I am still studying the idea..... wanted some feed back....
Thanks

Yup, I'm from Kuantan but living in KL for most of the time. Getting a pool that allows dogs entries would be a real hard job in malaysia.

most used are labradors (or any water retrievers) but they are quite heavy if ur planning to carry him around. small dogs might get washed away by strong currents im afraid.

No worries of that as i don't plan to allow the dog in water. Just to pick up scents.... so it can be on a boat most times.... or on the river banks... and not a lab though i know they are the best... i couldn't lift one Maybe a JR or Beagle or a min pin or a local breed..... some of them very smart. Need the right characters too....

Choose beagle then. Beagle has one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog. But they are better at ground-scenting (following a trail on the ground) than they are at air-scenting.

Ya sound like a good choice... though an air sniffing dog would be better
looking and looking for options now.....
