.................................................. ..........................
A Proper Diet is the Cornerstone of Good Health

Every cavy needs daily:

Vitamin C
Fresh Water
Quality Pellets
Unlimited Grass Hay
Fresh Vegetables

VITAMIN C: Guinea pigs cannot manufacture their own vitamin C and require 10 to 30 mg/kg daily to prevent scurvy. While many guinea pigs receive adequate vitamin C from fresh vegetables and pellets, you may wish to ensure your cavy gets adequate vitamin C by giving a quarter of a 100 mg chewable or plain vitamin C tablet, or provide a small amount of liquid vitamin C drops to each cavy. Young, ill, nursing and pregnant animals require extra vitamin C.
At right, Jpjhooper's guinea pigs enjoy their greens.

Do not add vitamin C to the water.

Water is vital to good health but because vitamin C changes the flavor, they may drink less.
Ascorbic acid degrades rapidly once added to water.
Some cavies drink a lot and some very little, so it is impossible to know how much vitamin C your pet is getting.
See also: Scurvy

WATER: Fresh, cold water, changed daily, (usually provided in a drip bottle to prevent contamination). Avoid distilled water. Avoid water high in minerals, especially if high in calcium. Do not put vitamins or medications in the water.

PELLETS: Plain dye free high quality guinea pig pellets (mixes with nuts are considered too rich), formulated with Vitamin C can be provided in a small heavy ceramic bowl to prevent tipping and cleaned daily. Each cavy will eat approximately 1/8 cup of pellets a day when also fed adequate hay and fresh vegetables. Purchase pellets in small quantities and store in a dry cool dark place to preserve the potency of the C (look for a pellet with an expiration date to check for freshness). Look for a pellet that uses stabilized vitamin C and has a "Best If Used By" date to ensure quality. Avoid pellets that use animal byproducts and those whose primary ingredient is corn.

Most cavy pellets are alfalfa based. Alfalfa pellets are suitable for young, growing and pregnant cavies. After your cavy is about a year old and fully developed (more), a timothy based pellet, which provides less calcium, may be a good choice . Two quality timothy based pellets are Timothy Choice pellets by KM's Hayloft and Cavy Cuisine by the Oxbow Hay Company.
See also: How to Recognize Quality Pellets

GRASS HAY: Unlimited high quality, grass hay (timothy and orchard grass are popular) should always be available to each and every guinea pig, no matter what age. Eating the long hay strands keeps their digestive system moving and helps prevent their teeth from over growing. It is usually placed in a wire rack off the floor for cleanliness.

Alfalfa hay can be given to young guinea pigs, pregnant, nursing or malnourished adults. But because of its high calcium content, alfalfa should be reserved as a treat for the average adult cavy. Excess calcium could contribute to the formation of bladder stones in older cavies. Remember that alfalfa is NOT a replacement for grass hay, but can be used to supplement the diet of some pigs. Grass hay should always be available to all cavies.

And remember, pellets are not a substitute for hay! High quality grass hay should be available for each guinea pig at all times.
See also: Grass Hay -- Selecting Hay

VEGETABLES: Small amounts of fresh vegetables (about a cup a day) are an important additional source of vitamin C and other nutrients. Parsley, romaine lettuce (rather than iceberg, which has less nutritional value and may result in loose stools if given in excess), a small piece of carrot, tomato, green or red pepper, spinach, and cantaloupe are popular choices. And clean, pesticide-free grass, clover, dandelion greens, corn husks and silk, will be appreciated by your pet. Rinse vegetables thoroughly. Do not feed wilted or spoiled food. Vegetables must be introduced slowly, to avoid digestive upsets. Once introduced, you can supply a variety of them to your pet. Variety is the key to maintaining your pigs' health. Be creative.
See also: "Favorite Vegetables and Fruits"
See also: Vegetable/Fruit Chart for vitamin C, calcium and oxalic acid content of many foods.
Optional: Unsweetened, pure cranberry juice, changed daily, may decrease the frequency of urinary tract infections.

Make sure that pellets, grass hay and water are always available (most cavies will not over eat). Vegetables can be provided two or more times a day, removing uneaten vegetables to prevent spoiling.

NOT RECOMMENDED IN DIET:

Avoid mixes or treats with nuts, seeds, dried fruit and dyed pieces.
Do not feed dairy and meat products (cavies are herbivores)
Avoid seeds in husks (like sunflower seeds), which can be a choking hazard.
Do not feed rabbit pellets (they do not contain Vitamin C and some may even include antibiotics toxic to cavies).
Avoid or use sparingly, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, collards, bok choy, broccoli), as they may cause gas in your pet.
Do not use mineral wheels. Never use Tang (which contains dyes, refined sugars, and very little vitamin C) in drinking water.
Avoid commercial treats marketed for cavies (like yoghurt drops) which can even be detrimental to their health. Consuming these empty calories (many contain fat, sugars and even excess calcium) can result in decreased consumption of the basic foods they really need.

No multivitamins! Plain vitamin C is fine, but multivitamins are not. Excessive amounts of fat soluble vitamins like A and D can cause serious problems for your pet.

Salam Pjud,

Congratulations on your new GP.
However I must stressed that you must be a responsible pet owner.
Not just pelihara for the fun of it.
Please don't buy the cheap pellet or even feed your GP with rabbit pellet eventhough some idiots kata boleh. Its a big NO...NO!
Ensure that your GP has enough Vit C in their diet as they need lots and lots of Vit C to stay healthy and strong.
You can feed them with alfalfa hay or timothy hay.
Either one will do.
Please change their diet everyday.
E.g. Morning you bagi makan hay.
Petang you bagi makan fresh veggies like carrots, cabbage, buncis
Next day change again e.g. apple, daun pandan, kangkung
This is what I do for my GP
I used to give pellet but now no more as I believe in giving fresh fruits and vege is the best.
Also you kena beli Lysinc+ Vit C and put a few drops in their drinking water.
Good Luck!

Welcome......
Selama akk bela GP memang akk letak Lysinc+Vit C.
Sekiranya you bagi kurang Vit C, Lysinc + Vit C ni will act as a supplement for your GP. It will provide all the nutrients that it needs sekiranya makanan yang you bagi tu kurang Vit C.
Satu lagi Lysinc nie akan boost up your GP punya immune system and keep it healthy always.
My sugar glider pun minum nie.
You just need to put 2 to 3 drops inside their bottle.
Even my cats minum Apple Vinegar Cider.
A few drops in their water will keep fleas away naturally, improve their digestive system, get rid of kidney stones dan lain lain.

Yes, I do totally agree with Apple Vinegar Cider!
I have been mixing apple cider in their water for almost a month now and I have noticed that their poo poo is less smelly compared to before. Also some cats who had loose stool poop nicely now
Initially they did not want to drink the water but after a while they did.
Now they are used to it.

P/s sorry tuan tanah off topic jap.

Hey it is ok... .. I'm happy to hear that your kittys doin' well with vinegar. I just ask only if u need to sell me one bottle coz there is no apple cider vinegar in the market here and I just send a message just to tell the benefits/how to use it. But I think you already knew . hehehe
I have to get it in mainland every month naik jetty 2 jam, naikk teksi dan bas hingga ke KL but it's worth all the trouble. hahahaha.
My kittys love it. They can't drink leaking faucet/pipes 'coz the taste is different.
My kitty and their pee also has no smell.
I think everyone should know how important it is to take care of our pets without too much fuss and easy for our pockets but costs a lot to our pets.

Yes, I knew the benefits but was scepticle in using it actually. Infact there are soo many wonders of using Apple Vinegar Cider not only on our pets but for us humans as well!

If you need help to purchase it, I can always help you to buy it since there is a pharmacy near to my house. But I am afraid that if it is sent by post / courier wouldn't the bottle be broken knowing how efficient our Post office is .

Yes, I do agree with you ever since using Apple Vinegar Cider, I noticed that their pee pee and poo poo is not as smelly as before. I am feeding my cats blackwood and the poo was not smelly however after using the vinegar it even smelled less.

Also, some of their fur became soft and shiny!

so happy to know that... a lot of people are skeptical about using natural and holistic products...most of us are not sure how to use it.
I'm allergic when it comes to food and household products. My skin cannot tolerate dish washing soap, thanks to my daily regimen with Bragg's. I think I just grew up where my mom had a hard time to cope up with my siblings and I. Thank God though, we are not allergic with animals except my brother and sister. They can't take danders and pollen so no cats or flowers near them. I have seen how my sister fainted and turned blue after her friends disturbed a bee nest. My mom would constantly used the apple cider vinegar to all her body without rubbing and patting it with cotton while my dad's doing a cpr.

Sudah off topic... sorry anyway, I grew up using what we can find in the kitchen and surroundings. Our adopted stray pets are full of skin diseases and ticks. My mom would use apple cider vinegar during rinse. They won't also lick it because of the strong smell and taste.
The juice from fresh basil leaves are treated to their skin disease. It is more effective in ring worms.
I used it last time with my kitten suffered from a flea bite and she's allergic to it which cause hot spots, flakes and constant licking to her skin. I soak the dry basil leaves and together with the water where I soaked in the dry basil leaves and blended it with few drops of apple cider to make the juice, pat it with cotton on her infected area. The recovery is faster for 1st aid until the product I ordered online was delivered on our doorstep.

Anyone can see the link here for more info about apple cider vinegar:

Personally, our basic daily use for our pets at home are baking soda, cod liver oil, evening primrose oil, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, basil, coriander, rosemary, parsley, celery, cinnamon and honey to our pets this include my parent's home: We have 9 dogs and 2 new pups, 2 boas, 7 rabbits and 3 GP also our fostered kitties at home .
Yes, our boas are in honey dip too and they love their green celery.

Kindly note: If you don't aware of it don't try all of them once.
Apple cider vinegar is good for basic starters. Not all herbs you can find on your kitchen counter is good. Some of them are very harmful. Nutmeg is highly toxic for dogs and cats.

P/S: Nurul, my friend delivered me a kek lapis last Hari Raya from Kuching and it was wrapped with bubble-wrap , inside the cake and outside the cake's box before she put it on the main box. She bought the bubble-wrap at the local bookstore. It was written on the top of box 'fragile' when it reached to me.
Please let me know if you can, thank you so much. I appreciate it a lot.
