Cat Vaccinations:
Helpful or Harmful? January 20, 2009

Think all feline vaccines are safe and necessary? Think again.

While there's no question that certain vaccines provide lifelong protection for your cat, research suggests they also carry risks. For some -- but perhaps not all -- vaccines, the benefits far outweigh those risks. (Learn which highly contagious cat diseases are most important to vaccinate against.)

Rather than inoculating your cat with every vaccine available, or giving boosters every year, your vet should tailor an immunization schedule to your cat's health needs. Before any vaccination, ask your vet these questions:

* Which are absolutely necessary?
* If my cat is strictly indoors, does he need vaccines for rabies, feline leukemia, or FIV?
* What's the risk of my cat developing a tumor at the injection site?
* Do vaccines ever cause the disease they're designed to prevent?
* What side effects should I expect? How long should they last?
* What is vaccine-induced anaphylactic shock? Is it life threatening?
* Does my cat need booster shots every year, or can he get them less frequently?
* Is it safe to give multiple vaccines on the same day -- especially if my kitten is also being spayed or neutered?

Hi,

I am not sure for cats but for dogs there are studies that shows that the certain vaccines in the combo (e.g 9 in 1) actually lasts more than 1 yr. So there is not a need to do yearly vaccinations. Not even human does that. But for some viruses in the combo it just lasts a year and it's not cost effective to produce a vaccine for that virus alone. So all in one cheaper and easier. Only very honest vets will tell you so speak to one if you can find about your queries.

About vaccines causing the virus to grow instead of preventing it, there is a possibility it will happen if the animal is not in good shape and is given the vaccine. It will make the animal more sick instead of producing antibodies against the virus.

Some animals are allergic to some vaccines you have to check that more with your vet. I'm not too sure on multiple vaccines. Any surgery is best to be done at least 1-2 weeks after the annual vaccination or after it. If you are sure that your pet is really really healthy you can give the vaccination right after the surgery or even 1 day after surgery which I have done before without any problems. But remember every animal is different.

Sorry can't answer all and very exact to your queries. I only know bout dogs..
